This site has one editorial rule above all others: name the study or admit the gap. No 'some research suggests,' no miracle claims. But you should not have to take our word for it — you should be able to read a sleep or health study yourself and judge whether the headline is earned. Here is the practical skeptic's toolkit for doing exactly that.
1. Correlation is not causation (and headlines love to forget it)
The single most common way health reporting misleads you: a study finds that two things occur together, and the headline implies one causes the other. 'People who sleep less weigh more' does not mean short sleep causes weight gain — it could be the reverse, or a third factor driving both. Observational studies find associations; only controlled experiments can support causation. When you see a cause-and-effect claim, check whether the study actually intervened and measured a result, or just observed a pattern.
2. Look at who was studied, and how many
A finding from 12 college students is a hypothesis, not a fact. Before you trust a result, ask: How many people? Who were they (age, health, sex — a result in young men may not apply to older women)? For how long? A small, short study on an unrepresentative group is a starting point for more research, not a reason to change your life. 3. Follow the money
Who funded the study, and does anyone stand to profit from the result? Industry-funded research is not automatically wrong, but it deserves an extra look. The same goes for the product being 'studied.' Transparency is a credibility signal in either direction.
4. Peer-reviewed vs preprint vs press release
There is a quality ladder. A peer-reviewed paper in a reputable journal has been vetted by other experts. A preprint has not — it may be perfectly good or seriously flawed. A press release or a brand's blog post is marketing until proven otherwise. Most bad health headlines come from a press release about a preprint, dressed up as settled science. Find out which rung you are standing on before you believe the claim.
5. Read past the headline to the actual numbers
Headlines sell; the paper qualifies. 'A daily supplement cut infections by 40%' sounds huge — until you learn it went from 5 cases to 3 in a tiny sample, or that the 40% was relative risk on a rare outcome. Whenever you can, find the real effect size and the base rate. A big relative improvement on a tiny absolute number is often not worth changing anything over.
6. Get your health news from outlets that respect the nuance
Most of this work is done for you if you read reporters who actually read the papers. You do not need a science degree to read health research without getting fooled — you need six questions: Is it causal or just correlated? Who and how many were studied? Who paid?
