A surprising number of people who conclude nasal strips 'don't work' simply put them in the wrong place. A strip an inch too high or too low does almost nothing. Placement is the difference between feeling your nostrils pull open and feeling nothing. Here is exactly where it goes.

The right spot: the flexible part of the nose

Run a finger down your nose from the top. Near the top it is hard bone; lower down, just above your nostrils, it turns to flexible cartilage. That flexible part — the widest span of soft tissue just above where the nostrils flare — is where the strip belongs. The strip needs to sit on tissue it can actually move; on the hard bony bridge higher up, there is nothing to lift.

A good check: after applying, you should feel a gentle outward pull opening your nostrils. If you feel nothing, the strip is probably too high on the bony part — peel it and move it down toward the nostrils.

Step by step

  1. Clean and dry the skin first. This is the step most people skip, and it is why strips fall off. Wash off any oil, lotion, moisturiser, or sweat and dry thoroughly — adhesive does not stick to oily skin. Do it before any nighttime moisturiser, not after.
  2. Find the flexible span just above the nostril flare.
  3. Centre the strip across the nose so equal amounts sit on each side, over the soft tissue.
  4. Press and hold the whole strip down for a few seconds, pressing the ends firmly onto the sides of the nose.
  5. Feel for the lift. You should sense your nostrils open slightly. That is the strip working.

A quality strip like TitanAir uses a skin-safe, beard-friendly adhesive designed to hold through the night and peel off without residue — but even the best adhesive fails on oily or damp skin, so the prep matters regardless of brand.

Removal

In the morning, do not rip it straight off. Wet it with a warm, damp cloth for a few seconds to loosen the adhesive, then peel slowly from the ends toward the centre. This protects the skin on the sensitive bridge of your nose.

Common placement mistakes

The bottom line

A nasal strip goes on clean, dry skin across the flexible part of the nose just above the nostril flare — not on the hard bridge. Get the spot right, prep the skin, and you will feel your nostrils pull open; get it wrong and you will wrongly conclude strips do not work. If you want the mechanism behind why the placement matters, here is how nasal strips work. And to keep the nose open and the mouth closed all night, strips pair naturally with mouth tape in the Titan Sleep System.
